What Is a California King Mattress?

A California king — often shortened to Cal king — measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. It is 4 inches narrower than a standard king (76") but 4 inches longer (80"), giving both sizes roughly the same total sleeping surface but in different proportions.

The key difference: a Cal king is built around length rather than width. If either sleeper is over 6'2" and has woken up with feet hanging off the end of a standard king or queen, the Cal king's 84" length solves that problem directly.

Who Is a California King Best For?

• Tall sleepers (6'2" and above) — The 84" length prevents feet from hanging off the end; far more comfortable night to night than a king at 80".

• Couples where one or both partners are tall — Full-length comfort for the taller sleeper without restricting their partner.

• Long but narrow master bedrooms — The 72" width fits better in rooms that run long rather than wide — a common layout where standard kings feel oversized side-to-side.

• Sleepers who prefer length over width — Those who move up and down in bed during sleep benefit more from extra length than extra width.

Important note: a Cal king gives each person in a couple 36 inches of width, 2 inches less than a standard king. For couples prioritizing maximum side-by-side space rather than length, the standard king is the better choice.

California King vs. Standard King — Full Comparison

Choosing between the two? If both partners are under 6'2" and want maximum width, go with a standard king. If either sleeper needs more legroom and the bedroom is longer than wide, the Cal king is the better fit. Our California king bed frames are built specifically for the 72" × 84" footprint — always pair Cal king mattresses with Cal king frames, as standard king frames are not interchangeable.

What Room Size Does a California King Need?

The Cal king's 84" length means you need a room with enough depth. A minimum of 12' × 14' is recommended. The 72" width is actually more manageable in rooms that are long but not particularly wide — giving the Cal king a natural advantage in certain master bedroom layouts.

Is Bedding Harder to Find for a California King?

Yes — Cal king bedding is less widely available than standard king bedding. Most major retailers carry Cal king sheets and comforters, but always confirm the size label before purchasing — California king and standard king fitted sheets are not interchangeable and will not fit correctly if swapped.

What Types of California King Mattresses Are Available?

• ● Memory Foam — Full-body contouring across the extra 84" length; great for couples with different sleeping positions.

• ● Hybrid — Coil support with foam layers; the most popular construction for Cal king sizes.

• ● Innerspring — Traditional responsive feel with good edge support across the full Cal king length.

• ● Latex — Naturally cooling and responsive; durable over years of use.
