What Is a Full Mattress?

A full mattress — also called a double mattress — measures 53 inches wide by 75 inches long. It is 15 inches wider than a twin but shares the same length, and it's a practical step up for solo sleepers who have outgrown a twin but don't have the room — or need — for a queen.

Full mattresses are one of the most affordable mid-size options and fit comfortably in standard guest bedrooms and studio apartments. Pair yours with one of our full bed frames — from upholstered platform beds to panel frames and storage beds — and optionally complete the room with a coordinated full bedroom set.

Who Is a Full Mattress Best For?

  • ●  Single adults who spread outA full provides 53" of personal width, noticeably more comfortable than a twin for solo sleepers who don't stay still.

  • ●  Teenagers transitioning from a twinMore room without the cost of a queen; pairs well with a full bed frame that can grow with them.

  • ●  Guest roomsFits comfortably in rooms as small as 10' × 10' and can accommodate one or two adults in a pinch.

  • ●  First apartmentsEasier to move than a queen, fit tighter bedroom layouts, and are typically priced lower.

Note on couples: if two adults share a full regularly, each person gets just 26.5 inches — less than a solo twin sleeper. Couples sleeping together long-term are better served by a queen mattress (30" each) or a king mattress (38" each).

The terms full and double refer to the exact same size — both are 53" × 75". The name 'double' is older and less commonly used today, but you may still encounter it in frame and bedding descriptions.

What Types of Full Mattresses Are Available?

  • ●  Memory FoamBody-contouring support; good for side and back sleepers.

  • ●  InnerspringTraditional feel, good airflow; the most budget-friendly full option.

  • ●  HybridCoil support plus foam comfort layers; a balanced choice for most sleepers.

  • ●  Pillow-TopExtra quilted cushioning on top; popular for pressure-sensitive sleepers and guest rooms.

How Much Room Does a Full Need?

A full mattress fits in a bedroom as small as 10' × 10'. For a practical layout — nightstands on both sides and 24–27" of walking space — plan for a room of 10' × 12' or more. The full's 75" length is the same as a twin, so long, narrow rooms that work for a twin generally work for a full too, just with a wider footprint.
