Chaise Lounges and Patio Chaise Lounges

A chaise lounge is the standard outdoor lounge chair format: a long, reclined seat with an adjustable backrest that can be set from upright to fully flat. Most outdoor chaise lounges are 24" to 28" wide and 60" to 80" long, providing a full-length reclining surface. The backrest typically adjusts through 3 to 5 positions. Outdoor Recliners

An outdoor recliner provides the same reclining function as a chaise lounge, but with a more compact, chair-like footprint. Most outdoor recliners use a manual lever or adjustable back mechanism to move through several recline positions, and some include a built-in footrest or ottoman. The seated footprint of an outdoor recliner is closer to a standard patio chair, making it practical in smaller spaces where a full chaise lounge would be too long.

Zero-Gravity Outdoor Chairs

A zero-gravity chair positions the legs at or above heart level in a reclined position that reduces spinal pressure and promotes relaxation. These chairs use a tensioned fabric seat on a folding aluminum or steel frame and are among the most lightweight and portable lounge chair formats. Most zero-gravity outdoor chairs fold flat for storage or transport. They are well-suited to camping, backyards, and any location where portability matters as much as comfort.

Outdoor Daybeds

An outdoor daybed provides the widest lounge surface in this category: a fully flat reclining area typically sized for one to two people, often with a canopy frame for shade. Daybeds are the largest and most dedicated lounging format available and suit large decks, covered patios, and poolside installations where extended, fully reclined rest is the primary use.

Poolside Lounge Chairs

Pool lounge chairs and chaise lounges are placed at the pool's edge or on a pool deck for sunbathing, drying off, and relaxed poolside sitting. For poolside use, choose materials that are fully rust-free and resistant to chlorine and saltwater: powder-coated aluminum and resin are the most practical choices. Deck and Patio Lounge Chairs

On a covered or uncovered deck or patio, a chaise lounge or outdoor recliner creates a dedicated relaxation zone distinct from a dining or conversation area. Position lounge chairs to face a view, a garden, or a fire pit rather than toward a wall or fence for maximum usability. A sun lounger or chaise lounge on a south-facing deck gets the most direct sun throughout the day; a shaded position suits afternoon lounging in hot climates.

Adjustable Backrest Positions

A chaise lounge or outdoor recliner with more than 3 adjustable back positions provides more flexibility for different lounging preferences. Look for a locking mechanism that holds each position securely without slipping; a back that gradually slides down during use is one of the most common complaints about lower-quality lounge chairs.

Materials and Durability

Cushions for Lounge Chairs

Outdoor lounge chair cushions that rest on slatted or mesh frames should be at least 2" thick for comfortable extended lounging. Solution-dyed acrylic cushion fabric handles direct sun and moisture significantly better than polyester: it dries faster, fades more slowly, and resists mold and mildew more effectively in humid climates. For poolside cushions, quick-dry foam core is preferable to standard foam, which holds water after immersion.
