What Is an Office Credenza?

An office credenza is a low, wide storage unit, typically 54"–72" wide and 24"–30" tall, that functions as a secondary surface and an enclosed storage piece in a home office. It sits behind or perpendicular to the primary desk and provides a practical work area for a printer, a secondary monitor, reference materials, or paperwork that doesn't need to stay on the main desk surface. Unlike a filing cabinet, which is purely storage, a credenza combines a usable flat top with cabinet and drawer storage below.

A freestanding credenza stands independently against the back or side wall of a home office. Cabinet configurations vary: two- or three-door units with adjustable interior shelves, dedicated file-depth drawer sections for hanging folders, or a mix of open and closed storage in one unit. If the credenza primarily holds a printer, measure the printer's footprint — most desktop printers need 15"–18" of depth and at least 18" of width. A 36"+ credenza comfortably accommodates both the printer and surrounding supplies. If it holds a secondary monitor, confirm the surface depth (20" minimum recommended) and that cable routing to the floor or back wall is workable.
