Choosing the Right Outdoor Dining Chair

Seat Height and Table Height Compatibility

Standard outdoor dining chairs have a seat height of 17" to 19", compatible with standard dining tables 28" to 30" high. If your table is counter-height (34" to 36") or bar-height (40" to 42"), you need counter-height or bar-height chairs, not standard dining chairs. Confirm seat height and table height are matched before purchasing chairs separately from the table.

Seat Depth and Back Height

A seat depth of at least 16" supports comfortable adult seating for meals of 30 minutes or more. Chairs with a shorter seat depth are better suited to brief seating. Back height affects both comfort and the visual proportion of the chair at the table: low-back dining chairs read as modern and open; high-back chairs provide more lumbar support and a more formal appearance.

Outdoor dining chairs sold in sets of 2 and 4 provide a consistent finish match and are typically more cost-effective than purchasing them individually.
