Garden Benches with Backs

A garden bench with a backrest is the most comfortable and widely used outdoor bench format. The arched or straight backrest provides lumbar support for extended sitting, making these benches well-suited to patios, front porches, garden paths, and any outdoor area where guests may sit for longer periods. Classic park bench profiles with cast-iron or steel ends and wood-slat seats are a traditional garden design that works in both formal and informal landscapes.

Backless Outdoor Benches

A backless outdoor bench occupies less visual space and a shallower floor footprint than a bench with a back, making it practical in narrow passages, on balconies, and where it is placed against a wall or railing. Backless bench designs also read as more contemporary and suit modern patio aesthetics, where a clean, uninterrupted line is preferred.

Outdoor Storage Benches

An outdoor storage bench combines a weather-resistant seat with a lift-top or drawer storage compartment below, providing a seating surface and enclosed storage for cushions, garden tools, outdoor toys, and accessories in one piece. Most outdoor storage benches are designed for entryways, mudrooms, and covered porches where the combination of seating and storage solves two problems at once. For outdoor storage benches used in fully exposed locations, confirm the lid seal and hinge are rated for outdoor weather.

Curved and Arbor Benches

Curved garden benches are designed for placement around fire pits, circular garden features, or as standalone destination seating in a landscape. Arbor benches combine an overhead trellis or pergola frame with an integrated bench seat, creating a shaded garden destination that serves as both a structural feature and a seating piece.

Materials for Outdoor Benches

Teak Garden Benches

Teak is the most durable natural wood for outdoor benches. Its inherent oil content provides water and rot resistance without sealing, and teak benches maintain their structural integrity for 15 to 25 years with minimal care in most US climates. A teak garden bench is a long-term landscape investment; the initial cost is higher than most alternatives, but the total cost of ownership over time is typically lower than replacing lower-cost wood or steel benches every few seasons.

Wood Outdoor Benches

Pine, cedar, acacia, and eucalyptus benches offer a natural wood appearance at a lower price than teak. These species require more care: annual application of an exterior wood sealer or oil significantly extends their life. Cedar and acacia are the most naturally weather-resistant of the non-teak wood species commonly used in outdoor benches; pine requires the most consistent treatment to prevent rot in wet conditions.

Metal Garden Benches

Cast iron and steel garden benches provide the heavy, grounded presence associated with traditional park and garden seating. Cast iron benches stay in place in wind and weather and develop a character patina over time, but require periodic repainting or rust treatment at exposed metal surfaces. Powder-coated steel is lighter and more rust-resistant than bare or lightly treated steel, but it still requires attention to any chipped coating in wet climates.

Resin and Polywood Benches

Resin and polywood (recycled plastic lumber) outdoor benches are the lowest-maintenance option available: they never rot, splinter, or require sealing, and clean easily with soap and water. The appearance and weight vary by product; high-quality polywood benches closely replicate the look of painted wood while lasting indefinitely with zero annual treatment.

Choosing an Outdoor Bench

Length and Seating Capacity

A bench of 42" to 48" comfortably seats 2 adults. A bench that seats 3 adults comfortably measures 54" to 60". For a front porch or entry, measure the available wall span and subtract at least 6" from each side for clearance before choosing a bench length.

Seat Height

Standard outdoor bench seat height is 17" to 19", matching the seated height of most outdoor chairs for visual consistency in a mixed seating arrangement. Bench seats below 16" feel low to the ground and are less comfortable for adults to rise from; seats above 20" are better suited to bar or counter-height contexts.
