Lateral vs. Vertical Filing Cabinets

Vertical File Cabinets

Vertical filing cabinets are the classic narrow tower design, with drawers that pull out front-to-back and files that hang in the same direction. They take up less floor space in the width dimension than a lateral cabinet, which makes them a practical choice beside or behind a desk when wall space is limited. Standard widths are 15" for letter-size files and 18" for legal-size. A two-drawer vertical cabinet fits beside most standard desks without blocking movement.

Lateral File Cabinets

Lateral filing cabinets are wider and lower; files hang side-to-side inside each drawer, allowing more files per drawer and making it easier to scan through folders without pulling the drawer fully out. Standard widths run from 30" to 42". The flat top surface is wide enough to hold a printer, a monitor, or to serve as an additional desk surface. Wood-finish lateral cabinets integrate well with traditional and transitional office furniture and are often used as a credenza substitute when full cabinet depth isn't needed.

Drawer Configurations

  • ● Two-Drawer: The most popular configuration — fits under or beside most desks; handles moderate filing volume.

  • ● Three-Drawer: Mid-height tower configuration; works as a freestanding storage piece or room divider in smaller offices.

  • ● Four-Drawer: Full-height vertical or wider lateral — suited to active paper-based workflows and dedicated records storage.

  • ● Mobile Pedestal: Two-drawer rolling units that tuck under desk surfaces — often sold as part of an office set and lockable for portability.

What to Consider Before Buying File Cabinets

Letter vs. Legal File Size

Letter-size (8.5" × 11") files fit in standard-width drawers. Legal-size (8.5" × 14") requires either an 18"+ vertical cabinet or a lateral cabinet where the deeper drawer accommodates the extra length. If your paper filing includes any legal documents, contracts, or financial records, choose a legal-capable cabinet — it handles both sizes without modification.

Locking File Cabinets

Most home office filing cabinets include a lock on the top drawer that engages all drawers simultaneously with one key turn. This is standard security for tax records, financial documents, and personal information. If you're storing anything sensitive in a shared living space, a locking filing cabinet is the straightforward solution. Look for models in which the lock cylinder is replaceable if the keys are lost.

Metal vs. Wood-Finish Cabinets

Steel filing cabinets are the most durable and typically the lighter option. They're the practical default for document storage where appearance is secondary. Wood-finish filing cabinets — in laminate or veneer over an engineered wood core — look considerably better in home environments where the cabinet is visible from the room's living areas, and they coordinate naturally with most office furniture collections.

Placement: Under-Desk vs. Beside-Desk

A two-drawer pedestal (typically 27"–28" tall) fits under a standard 29"–30" desk surface with minimal clearance. A two- or four-drawer vertical cabinet beside the desk adds storage height without consuming surface space. Lateral cabinets are best placed against the wall, where the wide, flat top can serve as a secondary surface.

Pair with the Right Storage

Need filing to be part of a coordinated look from the start? Browse our office furniture sets — many include a matching file pedestal or drawer tower alongside the desk and hutch.

For a wider storage solution that includes both filing and cabinet space, an office credenza provides lateral storage at desk height with an enclosed cabinet and a usable flat top.

Pairing a file cabinet with a new desk? Browse our home office desks — including desks with built-in pedestal drawers for buyers who want filing integrated into the desk itself.

For book and binder storage alongside your filing cabinets, a bookcase on the same office wall creates a complete document and reference storage system.
