Outdoor Rocking Chair Types

Classic Porch Rocking Chairs

The classic porch rocking chair is the most traditional format: a high-back chair with curved rocker rails on the base, sized for a single adult, and designed for front porch, covered patio, or deck use. Classic rocking chairs in painted wood, cedar, or poly lumber are the most common residential porch seating format. The rocker base requires a smooth, flat, hard surface to work properly: deck boards, concrete, and stone work well; grass and gravel do not support the rocker motion consistently.

Adirondack Rocking Chairs

An Adirondack rocking chair combines the wide-armed, high-backed profile of the Adirondack chair with a curved rocker base. This format provides the same relaxed, reclined Adirondack seating position with the added comfort of rocking motion. It is particularly popular for lakeside decks, front lawns, and front porches where the Adirondack aesthetic suits the setting. Available in plastic, poly lumber, wood, and resin.

Wicker Outdoor Rocking Chairs

A wicker rocking chair brings the warm, woven texture of all-weather wicker to the rocking chair format. Resin wicker over an aluminum or steel frame provides a more furnished, residential appearance than a wood or plastic rocker and suits covered porches, sunrooms, and decks where a softer aesthetic is preferred. Most wicker outdoor rocking chairs include a seat and back cushion; look for cushions with outdoor-rated, UV-stable fabric.

Outdoor Gliders: Rocking on a Track

Single Outdoor Gliders

An outdoor glider provides a smooth, horizontal rocking motion on a track mechanism rather than a curved rocker base. The glider's foot stays stationary on the floor while the seat moves forward and back, which means the glider works on any flat surface, including grass and gravel, where a traditional rocker base would sink or be unstable. Single outdoor gliders are sized for one adult and suit porches, decks, and patios where space for a full two-seat glider is limited.

Two-Seat Outdoor Gliders

A two-seat outdoor glider, also called a porch glider or glider bench, seats 2 adults side by side on a single gliding seat. This format is one of the most practical outdoor seating pieces for a covered front porch: it seats two in a compact footprint, delivers the relaxing gliding motion both occupants feel simultaneously, and typically includes a central armrest between the seats. Two-seat gliders commonly range from 48" to 60" in width.

Rocking Chair Materials for Outdoor Use

Wood Outdoor Rocking Chairs

Cedar, teak, and hardwood rocking chairs deliver the traditional craftsmanship and natural warmth expected from a wood rocker. For a fully exposed porch or deck, teak and cedar are the best-performing natural woods: cedar resists rot and insects naturally; teak's oil content provides water resistance without sealing. Pine and other softwood rockers are less expensive but require consistent annual sealing to prevent moisture damage in uncovered locations.

Poly Lumber and Resin Rocking Chairs

Poly lumber and high-density resin rocking chairs require zero maintenance: no painting, staining, or sealing, ever. The color is integral to the material rather than a surface coat, so UV exposure causes minimal fading compared to painted wood. Poly lumber rockers are heavier than most wood and resin alternatives, which improves stability during rocking on a porch with minor gaps between boards. They are the longest-lasting and lowest-maintenance rocking chair option available.

Wicker Outdoor Rocking Chairs

All-weather resin wicker over a steel or aluminum frame provides a furnished, upholstered character that suits a covered porch where the rocking chair is part of a cohesive outdoor living setup rather than a standalone piece. Wicker rockers with cushions are among the most comfortable outdoor rocking chair formats for extended use.

Buying Considerations

Rocker Length and Porch Clearance

The curved rocker rails extend beyond the front and back of the chair seat. A standard outdoor rocking chair measures approximately 36" to 42" from the front of the extended rocker to the rear. Measure the porch depth and confirm there is at least 6" of clearance behind the rear rocker arc so the chair does not strike the wall or railing during full rocking motion.

Seat Dimensions and Comfort

A seat width of 20" to 24" comfortably suits most adults. Seat height of 17" to 19" is standard for outdoor rocking chairs; lower seats provide a more reclined rocking position but are harder to rise from for older adults. A seat depth of 18" to 20" provides sufficient thigh support for extended rocking.
