Storage Bench Styles and Configurations

Lift-Top Storage Benches

A lift-top storage bench has a hinged seat that opens to reveal a storage compartment below. This is the most common storage bench format: the seat closes flush, giving the piece a clean, furniture-like appearance, while the interior holds shoes, blankets, toys, or seasonal items out of sight. Compartment depth typically ranges from 10" to 14", accommodating shoes lying flat or folded textiles without crowding. Look for hinges with a soft-close or stay mechanism, particularly in households with children.

Storage Benches with Drawers

A bench with drawers below the seat provides divided, accessible storage without requiring the seat to open. This works well when the bench serves as a more permanent seating piece in a bedroom or living room, where pulling open a drawer is a more natural motion than lifting a lid. Most drawer configurations include 1 to 2 drawers on full-extension slides, with storage depth of 8" to 12".

Open-Cubby Shoe Storage Benches

A shoe storage bench with open cubbies below the seat is one of the most practical entryway configurations. Each cubby holds 1 to 2 pairs of shoes, keeping footwear accessible without requiring a separate shoe rack or cabinet. Most cubby benches are designed with 2 to 4 sections across and one to two rows of depth. The open design allows footwear to air out between wears, which a fully enclosed storage compartment does not.

Where Storage Benches Work Best

Entryway and Foyer Benches

The entryway bench with storage is one of the most searched furniture pieces in this category. It provides a seated spot for putting on and taking off shoes and keeps shoes, bags, and seasonal accessories that accumulate near the front door out of sight. Standard entryway bench widths range from 36" to 48", which fit most foyer and hallway wall spans while leaving adequate passage. A narrower 30" bench works in tighter hallways. Pairing an entryway storage bench with a wall-mounted coat rack above it recreates most of the function of a hall tree in two separate pieces.

Bedroom Benches: End of Bed and Beside the Bed

A storage bench at the foot of the bed gives a bedroom two practical functions in one piece: a seat for putting on shoes in the morning and concealed storage for extra blankets, pillows, off-season clothing, or any item that would otherwise end up on the bed. For a king or queen bed, a bench of 48" to 54" in width fills the foot of the bed proportionally. For a full bed, the right range is 36" to 42". Seat height of 17" to 19" matches standard bed frame height for most platform and standard beds.

Mudroom Storage Benches

In a mudroom, the storage bench is usually the hardest-working piece of furniture. It handles boot removal, bag drop, and the daily chaos of a household arriving home at once. For mudroom use, prioritize benches with durable upholstery or a wood seat that can be wiped down, deep storage for boots and bulky seasonal gear, and construction solid enough to handle repeated adult and child weight. Benches positioned below a wall-mounted coat hook panel or hall tree maximize the wall's vertical storage capacity while also accommodating the bench's footprint.

What to Check Before Buying

Weight Capacity

Most upholstered storage benches are rated for 250 to 300 lbs of seated weight. For households with multiple adults sitting simultaneously, verify the rated capacity and frame construction. Solid-wood frames outperform particleboard frames in sustained-weight situations.

Seat Height

A seat height of 17" to 19" suits most adults for the seated tasks a storage bench supports: putting on shoes, brief rest, or sitting at the foot of a bed. Benches under 16" read as low to the floor and may be difficult to rise from; benches over 20" may feel too high for shorter adults and children.

Interior Storage Depth

Lift-top compartments under 8" of interior depth are difficult to use practically. A depth of 10" to 14" comfortably holds shoes lying flat, folded blankets, or a combination of smaller items stacked inside. For boot storage, confirm the compartment height is sufficient for the boot shaft when laid flat.

Complete the Room

For a full entryway storage system, pair a storage bench with a hall tree or coat rack from our storage furniture collection, which includes wall-mounted and freestanding hanging options.

Need a cabinet or enclosed storage alongside your bench? Our cabinets and chests include accent cabinets and linen-style storage pieces that work in the same spaces as storage benches.

For a softer, upholstered storage option in a living room, a storage ottoman provides the same concealed storage function while offering a more versatile presence.
