Bar stools are elevated seating pieces designed for use at kitchen islands, breakfast bars, counters, home bars, and pub-height tables. They are distinguished from standard dining chairs by their elevated seat height and the presence (or absence) of a footrest rail. The Most Important Spec: Getting Seat Height Right

The single most common purchasing mistake with bar stools is selecting the wrong seat height. The rule is simple: leave 10"–12" of clearance between the counter surface and the top of the stool seat.

• ● Counter Height (seat 24"–26"): For counters 34"–37" tall. This covers the vast majority of standard kitchen islands and breakfast bars. The most commonly purchased height category.

• ● Bar Height (seat 28"–30"): For bars and pub tables 40"–43" tall. Typical for home bars, taller kitchen islands, and pub-style dining tables.

• ● Adjustable Height (seat 22"–30" pneumatic): Gas-lift mechanism allows switching between counter and bar height. Ideal when you're unsure of the counter height or want flexibility.

• ● Spectator / Extra Tall (seat 32"–34"): For counters or bars taller than 44". Less common but needed for custom kitchen builds.

If your counter is a standard kitchen island, counter height bar stools are almost always the correct choice. If you're setting up a dedicated home bar with a raised rail surface, bar height stools are required.

How Many Stools Fit at Your Counter?

Allow 16"–18" of counter width per stool for armless designs. For stools with arms, allow 26"–28". A 48" island seats 2–3 stools; a 60" island seats 3–4; a 72" island seats 4; a 96" island accommodates 5–6. Leave at least 6" from the end of the counter to the first stool position.
