What Is the Difference Between a Blanket and a Throw?

A blanket is sized to cover a bed. Standard bed blankets come in Twin, Full, Queen, and King dimensions that match your mattress. A throw is smaller (typically 50" x 60" to 50" x 70") and is designed for decorative draping over the foot of a bed, the arm of a couch, or the back of a chair. Throws are accent pieces; blankets are functional bedding layers.

A bed blanket should be wide enough to drape over the sides of your mattress but not so large that it pools on the floor. For a Twin bed, look for blankets around 66" x 90". For a Queen, aim for 90" x 90" to 90" x 100". King beds need blankets at least 108" x 90" for proper side coverage. If you use a comforter as your primary warmth layer, a thinner bed blanket underneath helps regulate temperature between the sheets and the comforter.

How Do Weighted Blankets Work?

Weighted blankets use glass beads or plastic pellets sewn into evenly distributed pockets to create gentle, even pressure across your body. This pressure, called deep pressure stimulation, mimics the feeling of being held and can promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality. Most adults do well with a weighted blanket that is approximately 10% of their body weight. A 150 lb person, for example, would typically choose a 15 lb blanket.

Blanket Care Tips

Fleece and cotton blankets are machine washable on a gentle cycle and can be tumble-dried on low heat. Sherpa blankets should be washed in cold water and air-dried or dried on the lowest setting to preserve the plush texture. Weighted blankets require a large-capacity washer; check your machine's weight limit before washing. Chunky knit blankets are best spot cleaned or hand-washed to maintain their shape.

A throw at the foot of the bed adds a contrasting texture or color pop, tying the room together. For a layered, inviting look, fold the throw in thirds lengthwise and drape it across the lower third of the bed. Choose a material and color that complements your comforter or duvet cover for a cohesive bedroom aesthetic.
