Why Is Standard Profile the Most Common?

For decades, the standard box spring height was 7 to 8 inches. Bed frame manufacturers designed their rails, slat supports, and headboard attachment points around this measurement. When you combine a standard profile foundation with a 10" to 12" mattress, the total bed height lands in the 24" to 28" comfort zone that most adults prefer for sitting on the edge and getting in and out of bed.

When Should You Choose a Standard Profile Base?

Choose a standard profile when your bed frame was designed for a traditional box spring, when you are replacing an old foundation and want to keep the same bed height, or when your mattress is between 8" and 12" thick. If your mattress is thicker than 12" and you find the total height too tall, consider stepping down to a low profile base from our low profile foundations collection.

What Mattress Works on a Standard Foundation?

All mattress types are compatible with a standard profile foundation: innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, and latex. For foam and hybrid models, make sure the foundation surface is flat and rigid rather than coil-based. Our mattresses by type collection lists construction details for every model.

Available Sizes

Standard profile foundations are available in Twin (38" x 75"), Twin XL (38" x 80"), Full (54" x 75"), Queen (60" x 80"), King (76" x 80"), and California King (72" x 84"). King and Cal King sizes are available in both single-piece and split options for easier delivery.

Standard vs. High Profile: Do You Need More Height?

If you find that a standard profile base does not bring your mattress high enough for comfortable entry and exit, or if you want more under-bed storage clearance, a high profile foundation adds roughly 2 extra inches. Browse our high profile foundations to compare.
