What Is the Difference Between Percale and Sateen Sheets?

Percale and sateen refer to the weave of the fabric, not the material. Percale uses a one-over, one-under weave that creates a crisp, matte finish with excellent breathability. It feels cool to the touch and gets softer with every wash, making it ideal for warm sleepers and summer months. Sateen uses a four-over, one-under weave that produces a silky, luminous finish with a heavier drape. It feels smoother and warmer, making it a good choice for cooler climates or sleepers who prefer a luxurious hand feel.

Does Thread Count Really Matter?

Thread count measures the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Higher thread counts (300 to 600) generally indicate a softer, denser weave, but thread count alone does not determine quality. A 300-thread-count percale sheet made from long-staple cotton will outperform a 1,000-thread-count sheet made from short, low-quality fibers. Focus on the material (long-staple cotton, Egyptian cotton, or Supima) and the weave before comparing thread counts.

What Are Deep Pocket Sheets and Do You Need Them?

Deep pocket sheets have fitted-sheet corners that stretch to accommodate mattresses thicker than the standard 12 inches. If your mattress is 14" to 18" tall, or if you use a mattress topper on top of your mattress, standard sheets will pop off the corners overnight. Rotating between 2 to 3 sheet sets extends the life of each set.
