What Is a Box Spring and Do You Still Need One?
A box spring is a mattress support base that traditionally consists of a wood frame filled with steel coils, topped with a fabric cover. Its job is to absorb impact, add height to your bed, and provide a flat, even surface for your mattress.
Whether you need one depends on your bed frame and mattress type. If your bed frame has a solid slat system or a platform base, a box spring is generally not required. But if your frame has wide-spaced slats or needs additional height, a foundation or box spring fills both roles. Traditional innerspring mattresses still benefit most from a box spring, while memory foam and hybrid mattresses perform well on either a box spring or a slatted platform.
What Is the Difference Between a Box Spring and a Foundation?
A traditional box spring uses internal steel coils to provide a slight give or bounce beneath the mattress. A modern foundation (sometimes called a mattress foundation or platform foundation) replaces those coils with a rigid wood slat system or a solid wood panel. Foundations provide a firmer, more stable surface, which is why most mattress manufacturers now recommend them over traditional coil box springs, especially for foam and hybrid mattresses.
At Ornate Home, our collection includes both types. If your mattress warranty specifies a "foundation," you want the rigid, slat-based version rather than a coil box spring.
How to Choose the Right Foundation or Box Spring
Start with your mattress type. Memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses work best on a flat, rigid foundation that will not sag between slats. Innerspring mattresses can work on either a foundation or a traditional coil box spring. Next, consider height. Foundations come in three profile options, and the right one depends on your bed frame height and how high you want your mattress surface off the floor. Our foundations by height collection makes it easy to compare low, standard, and high profile options side by side.
What Height Box Spring Do You Need?
Box spring and foundation height (also called profile) typically ranges from 4 to 9 inches. The three standard options are:
|
Profile |
Typical Height |
Best For |
|
Low Profile |
4" - 5.5" |
Platform beds, low bed frames, modern aesthetics |
|
Standard Profile |
7" - 7.5" |
Traditional bed frames, balanced bed height |
|
High Profile |
9" - 9.5" |
Tall frames, easier entry/exit, added storage space |
If you already have a bed frame and want to figure out your ideal mattress surface height, add the frame height plus the foundation height plus the mattress height. Most people find a total sleeping surface between 24 and 28 inches off the floor most comfortable.
Do You Need a Box Spring with a Platform Bed?
Generally, no. Platform beds are designed with a built-in slat system or solid panel that supports your mattress directly, eliminating the need for a separate foundation. Adding a box spring on top of a platform bed will raise the mattress higher than intended and can create an awkward, top-heavy look. However, if your platform bed has widely spaced slats (more than 3 inches apart), a bunkie board or thin foundation may be needed to prevent mattress sagging. Browse our beds collection to check slat specifications for specific platform models.
How Long Does a Box Spring Last?
A well-built box spring or foundation typically lasts 8 to 10 years, roughly the same lifespan as the mattress it supports. Signs that your foundation needs replacing include visible sagging, creaking or squeaking noises, uneven support, and a noticeable decline in mattress comfort. Replacing an old box spring when you buy a new mattress ensures your investment is supported properly from day one.
Box Spring vs. Bunkie Board vs. Adjustable Base
A bunkie board is an ultra-thin support surface (usually 1 to 3 inches thick) designed for bunk beds or platform beds where a full box spring would add too much height. An adjustable base is a motorized foundation that lets you raise and lower the head and foot of your mattress. If motorized positioning interests you, our adjustable bed bases offer Zero Gravity, massage, and wireless remote features across every size.
