What Size Is a Full Memory Foam Mattress?

A full mattress, also called a double, measures 53 inches wide by 75 inches long. It shares the same length as a memory foam twin but adds 15 inches of width. This makes it a comfortable upgrade for solo sleepers who want room to move without jumping to a queen-size footprint.

Who Should Choose a Full Size?

Teens and young adults: The full is the natural step up from a twin when a teenager needs more sleeping space but the bedroom can't accommodate a 60-inch wide queen. At 53 inches, it fits bedrooms as small as 10' x 10'.

Studio apartments: In compact living spaces where the bed doubles as a sitting area during the day, a full-size memory foam mattress offers enough width for comfortable lounging without dominating the room.

Guest rooms: A full is wide enough for most single guests and takes up less floor space than a queen, leaving room for a dresser or desk.

Couples who share a full will each have roughly 26.5 inches of personal space, which is narrower than a crib. For two adults, stepping up to a memory foam queen adds 7 more inches of total width and 5 inches of length.

Memory Foam Construction in Full Size

Full-size memory foam mattresses use the same foam technologies as larger sizes. The key difference is that a solo sleeper on a full-size surface will experience slightly less motion transfer simply because there is less surface area for vibrations to travel across.

Gel memory foam is especially popular in full sizes used in smaller rooms, where less air circulation can make a traditional foam mattress sleep warmer than expected. The gel layer helps regulate surface temperature throughout the night.

High-density base foam is what determines long-term durability. Look for a support base of at least 6 inches if the mattress will be used nightly rather than reserved for occasional guest use.

What Room Size Works for a Full Mattress?

The 75-inch length is the same as a twin, so rooms that accommodate a twin lengthwise will also fit a full. The extra 15 inches of width is the main consideration. Browse our full bed frames for platform, panel, and storage options designed for this size.

Completing a Full Bedroom Setup

A memory foam mattress works best on a flat, ventilated surface. Platform beds or slatted frames with slats no wider than 3 inches apart are ideal. If you're furnishing an entire room around a full-size bed, our full bedroom sets include matching nightstands, dressers, and mirrors to streamline the process.
